I don’t read my comics
I’ve noticed lately that, as my title suggests, I don’t read all my comics. I keep buying more than I read, and it’s not because I buy too many. This week I bought three. I can only make myself read two.
Justice Society of America #2
I was excited about this relaunch because Geoff Johns’ handling of the JSA was part of what got me reading DC before Infinite Crisis. Well this new Starman annoys me. He annoys me so much I can’t get through this issue. I flipped through it though. Looks like it might go somewhere cool. Maybe I’ll buy some more and read them once it does get cool.
Powers #22
I can’t tell you the last time I read an issue of Powers. It was probably somewhere in the teens. It got to a point where it was just like looking at a profane pornographic episode of Batman the Animated Series. If people are going to cuss and be naked, fine, it just seemed like that’s all it was. So I thought “I’ll just keep picking them up and read them all at once to get the full story.” Never happened. Still buying it.
The Spirit #1
I can’t even get past the first page of this. I just don’t have the enthusiasm. I thought Will Eisner’s Spirit comics were kind of cool, for simple-minded old-fashioned stories. Hopefully Darwyn Cooke has at least eliminated the racist elements. I think what bugged me about this one was that I flipped through to see how he incorporated the “The Spirit” name into the art for the title page and it was totally uninspired. I was extremely impressed with how it was worked into the Batman / Spirit issue from a few weeks ago. Apparently Jeph Loeb came up with that one.
Superman: Confidential #3
Another Darwyn Cooke effort. Issues 1 and 2 moved so slowly that I just can’t myself to care about what’s happening in here. Maybe it’s just a general distaste for out-of-continuity stories? I despised Batman Confidential #1. That’s my best theory now, because it’s not like there’s any shortage of fresh new takes on the early days of Batman and Superman. But I really liked Matt Wagner’s recent Batman miniseries, so there goes that theory.
So I guess anyone want to lobby one way or the other on whether or not I should actually read these? Keep buying them? Give them to you?
You could give them to me, but I still haven’t read Green Arrow, JSA, or all of Superman from this week. I’ve been too busy to take a crap and get it all hammered it.
That’s a gross sentence.
I said “hammered out,” not “hammered it.” Stupid comment thing.
You haven’t read Superman? You told me to buy it because it was awesome. Jerk.
I flipped through it and read the first few pages, which were awesome.
I think I’ll be writing something about JSA later this week. If the last page doesn’t get you excited about Starman you should just drop the book.
The last page didn’t get me excited, because, rather than say, “Wow! That’s neat,” I said, “Who the hell is that?”
Well I read Superman Confidential and I liked it, and JSA wasn’t as bad as I feared. I’m going to stick with both. I still haven’t read Spirit #1, but I picked up #2 this week so I’ll give it a stab later. So no one gets my free comics.
