New Podcast of Doom (transcript):
SECRET INVASION!

While Doom DeLuise is MIA, Doominator and I recorded a podcast in his absence. Read along as two people with bad memories and limited grasp on recent events attempt to speculate on the Secret Invasion!

JIM DOOM: Hello and welcome to the latest Podcast of Doom. I’m Jim Doom, and filling in for Doom DeLuise this week is Doominator. Good afternoon, Doominator. What’s on your mind this week?

DOOMINATOR: This Secret Invasion business – how is it going to relate to the plot in X-Men from a few years ago, where Wolverine was a Skrull imposter?

JD: Man, I don’t know, but I think there’s a decent chance Wolverine is going to end up being a Skrull, or at least that there is a Wolverine Skrull running around.

I was thinking about how he “died” and was resurrected by The Hand, which has been run by Elektra, who is now revealed to be a Skrull.

Also, I’ve been re-reading New Avengers, and when they went to the Savage Land in pursuit of Sauron in the early issues, Wolverine was there and he came to them. Makes me wonder if he was a Skrull and became “Wolverine” in order to buy some time for the Skrulls there by distracting the New Avengers.

I mean just think about it, what’s the point of making Elektra a skrull? Isn’t Wolverine really the only character to have any kind of meaningful interaction with her over the past few years?

D: and Xavier leading a team of Skrulls around the time of the maximum security plotline.

JD: When was that?

D: Here, I printed this out for you. (Editor’s note: view the information Doominator printed out here)

JD: Hmm. Says here they had “innate powers.” That’s probably significant, because what’s being seen with these new Skrulls is that they have powers beyond just shapeshifting.

D: And outside of the traditional Super Skrull.

JD: You know what, Bendis wrote an interaction between Elektra and Daredevil toward the end of his run, if I remember right. And Matt kind of professed his love, or at least some regret that things weren’t like they used to be, and she had no reaction. He of course beat himself up over that, but that would make sense if she wasn’t actually Elektra.

D: Has she ever been? Maybe she wasn’t resurrected at all.

JD: Yeah, like maybe she was just killed by Bullseye – the end.

D: Which would suck for the three fans of her ongoing from 96.

JD: Wasn’t the Hand in bed with Hydra in that series? Or was it AIM? I can never keep those two groups of bad guys straight. But Spider-Woman is a double-agent with one of those groups also, and she’s in the New Avengers.

D: Never read it. My question is the degree of X-Men infiltration, which will make things really interesting. And the more we talk, the more my money is on Psylocke, who has been killed or near-killed about a dozen times.

JD: Is she even doing anything these days?

D: She’s in New Excalibur, aka, why can’t we get rid of Chris Clairmont? No wait, she’s with the Exiles.

JD: Well there’s also Professor X and Jean Grey, if you want to talk about getting killed and revived over and over.

D: I think Professor X is a candidate, and maybe Cadre K was a trap.

JD: Thing is, with Bendis writing House of M as well, and having laid plans since before that, I’m wondering if there’s going to be some connection between people who were affected by House of M and people who are Skrulls.

D: Maybe it’s the Skrulls who corrupted Wanda, to get the mutants out of the way.

JD: I think I read something somewhere that suggested that. I can’t remember where though. Maybe a Bendis interview? But yeah, that would certainly make sense.

I’m trying to think if it’d make sense for Quicksilver to be a Skrull, but that Son of M miniseries and his X-Factor appearances don’t really fit that very well. He actually tried to get his daughter back by fighting against the Inhumans, who are led by Blackbolt, whom we now now is a Skrull.

D: If they try to explain Xorneto with this, i’ll be pissed

JD: Oh wait, hold on, maybe in that series at some point, Skrull Quicksilver swaps himself with Blackbolt. Real Quicksilver is released, wanting to get his daughter back, but from that point on, Blackbolt is replaced?

I thought I’d never want to re-read that series but maybe I will now.

D: Cyclops died, and came back with a different personality, albeit briefly, just before Grant Morrison took over. That’s probably a stretch, though.

JD: I wonder if The Sentry is going to end up being a Skrull tool. The New Avengers were all kind of led to that supervillain prison, some of them against their will. Reed Richards had no memory of asking Matt Murdock to go talk to The Sentry.

D: So my conjectures wouldn’t be great.

JD: Well, Cyclops did just disband the X-Men. He’s not acting like such a great guy.

He ordered people to kill Cable, no questions asked.

D: His own son. Hmm.

JD: Yep.

D: They’re doing a good job of building this paranoia. And tony stark makes sense.
They have never sorted out the pre-heroes reborn mess, but that one is probably a red herring.

JD: No, I think Tony Stark will end up being the hero. A great hero moment needs to have some kind of redemption from something, and they’ve given him plenty to need redeeming from.

D: You’ve been reading Captain America.

JD: I have.

D: Likelihood of the Winter Soldier being a Skrull?

JD: I think that Captain America will be pretty much untouched by this. Ed Brubaker has said so, and I really hope that’s the case too.

When did House of M happen in relation to New Avengers? Do you remember?

D: It was right after Wanda went insane. Decause the impetus was Wanda, and disbanding the Avengers after everything got decimated.

JD: Oh duh. That was a stupid question. So New Avengers probably started after House of M, right?

D: It was right before.

JD: So Professor X disappeared after House of M. Hawkeye came back to life.

D: Looks like Professor X is a big maybe, although recent events make that weirder. Maybe that one is wrong, especially given “X-Men: Legacy.”

JD: Well, I haven’t been reading that.
