Comics on Slate
Posted in news by Jean-Claude Van Doom
It’s sort of amusing to read on Slate a story about how comics aren’t just about superheroes anymore, which goes under the pretense of breaking news. But, perhaps it is breaking news to those people out there who haven’t yet jumped on the comics bandwagon (yes, there’s still room).
Teasing aside, it always is nice to see books like Concrete, Astro City and Ex Machina get some front-page attention from a major news/opinion source. You might even find reference to a new book or two.
I find it ironic that very often, it’s the comics most firmly rooted in reality that get credit for being the most unique and most inventive. Sure, they’re breaking out of a tradition of sorts, but those accolades seem to stem more from superhero shame than genuine worthiness.
I agree. I’d also say that, if anything, the movement in comics over the past year especially has been a return to the ridiculous fun of superhero stories and moving away from exactly what the Slate piece espoused.
