Week Twenty-Two
Magnus: Robot Hunted! That tag on the cover makes it sound awesome. If only we were given an entire issue of Doc Magnus being hunted by big robots. We’re only given a few pages worth, though; although, those few pages are just as sweet as the cover promised.
This week, number twenty-two of fifty-two, starts off with Lex Luthor getting angry at his stupid assistants who fail to figure out who Supernova is. Luthor debunks the Kon-El possibility, at which point Supernova shows up hovering outside Luthor’s office window, which leads Luthor to think that Supernova is, in fact, Superman with a mask. Luthor tries to test himself for the metagene program, but, again, he’s not capable of undertaking the experiment for some reason. Bad genes. Meanwhile, Jon Standing Bear, a big muscle-bound Indian shows up in Metropolis, tosses a would-be sex offender through the window of a bus, and attends his father’s funeral. After the funeral, his grandfather shows Jon that his destiny is to become Super-Chief. Jon then smothers his grandfather with a pillow, since that’s what the old drunk wanted. On another part of town, John Henry Irons finds a guy who was given the metagene therapy only to have it taken away from him. Irons tells the man he’ll help. Somewhere else, we find Doc Magnus, who’s on the phone with his brother trying to explain things. His brother brings up S.H.A.D.E. and it sounds like they may be involved with the kidnapping of scientists thing. A bunch of cheap Metal Men knock-offs then show up and kill Mercury and blow up the Doc’s house. Next in “52,” it looks like we’re getting Montoya and the Question, along with Isis, and along with Big Gay Al. Should be fun.
This issue is pretty sweet. I’m a sucker for big explosions and giant robots, so when you put those two together, I’m happy as a clam. While I don’t like the idea of introducing an old campy character and setting them up to be a mainstay in “52,” I do kind of like the idea of a big Indian killer. Probably because that book, “Indian Killer,” by Sherman Alexie is friggin’ great.
I’m hoping we get more robot hunting stuff in the weeks to come. That’d give me, like, twenty boners.
See ya in seven.
Y’know, if Magnus and the Metal Men hadn’t already shown up OYL in JLA #1, I might be half-way interested in his sub-plot. Oh well.
Color me completely uninterested in the rest of 52. I was trying really hard to stay somewhat invested in the series, but it’s just not coming through, mostly because of the inherent problems of knowing the outcome.
Also, it (so far) hasn’t cleared up any of the most interesting discrepancies from IC to OYL.
