Catching up on Comics

sinestro as parallax green lantern 20On April 10th of this year, I moved out of the United States.

I left behind my friends, my family, and, most importantly, my comic books. Living in a new country on the opposite side of the planet from what I’m used to is very strange in many ways, but the one thing I’ve had a particularly hard time adjusting to is not having a comic shop nearby, where I can spend more money than I should every Wednesday afternoon.

Luckily, as Dr. Ian Malcolm so eloquently put it in the first Jurassic Park movie, “Life… finds a way.”

So now, nearly three months since I left America, and over five months since I stopped reading comics (I had to prepare myself), I’ve finally found a way to get caught up, and it is amazing. It hasn’t been that long, in the scheme of things, but I feel I’ve missed out on so much.

For starters, Geoff Johns finished out his epic run on Green Lantern, with a finale that I just finished reading a few hours ago. Mighty impressive. I stopped reading comics for several years, and GL: Rebirth is what brought me back into the fold. It’s absolutely staggering when you think of all the things he’s done with those characters. I don’t know if you read Green Lantern #20, but if you haven’t, it’s worth it. I’m sure there were a bunch of people who said so a few months ago, but wow! Just an amazing conclusion.

I also just got caught up on All New X-Men, which is weird and entertaining. I find the pencils by Stuart Immonen to be the best part, though Bendis’ story is engaging, too. Throughout, I keep wondering, “What would happen if the First Class of X-Men just stayed here, in the present timeline?” What if that was just the new status quo? How great would that be? I know it “can’t” happen, but why not? What’s stopping them?

Still, though, I haven’t even started in on any of the Justice Leagues, and I’m only halfway excited about reading more of the new Nova. I really loved the old Nova, written by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning a few years ago.

Once I get all the way caught up on my backlog, I’ll start reviewing some of these comics. You may have noticed I’ve been focusing mostly on movies for the past couple of weeks on this a’here blog, but that’ll change soon.

Here’s what I’m currently caught up on: Green Lantern, All New X-Men, Daredevil (WOW!), Action Comics, Aquaman, X-Factor, and Walking Dead.

These are the series I own yet haven’t read yet: Batman, Guardians of the Galaxy, Indestructible Hulk, Justice League, JLA, Nova, Saga, Superior Spider-Man, and Fatale.

What else should I check out? What have I been missing out on, world? Let me know, and I’ll read it.
