The Doomino Effect for the week of Nov 5, 2008

This week was one of my most unusual comic-buying experiences ever. Nothing that I buy on a monthly basis came out (unless you count the Final Crisis tie-in) but I still ended up with five books. I decided to give Ultimatum #1 a try, since I’ve heard it might end up destroying the Ultimate Universe….

Book of Doom:
X-Men and Spider-Man #1

Welcome once again to the Book of Doom. This week we’ll be reviewing X-Men and Spider-Man #1, Marvel’s latest attempt to milk $4 out of it’s readers with a needless mini-series featuring its A-list characters. But y’know, sometimes these needless mini-series turn out to be a good read. This week there’s four of us trying…

The Adventures of Blake & Mortimer vol. 4: The Francis Blake Affair

By Jean Van Hamme (W) and Ted Benoit (A) Published by Cinebook, 2008; 68 pages; $15.95 The Adventures of Blake & Mortimer is a reprint series of comics starring characters created by Belgian writer / artist Edgar P. Jacobs in the 1940s. The first three volumes issued by Cinebook were works created by Jacobs. After…

The Doomino Effect for Oct 29, 2008

I set here writing this comic review in hopes it will take my mind off the impending election results. Speaking of fearing a takeover of hate-filled creatures, I’ll start off with Final Crisis: Rage of the Red Lanterns. I almost chose this as our Book of Doom, but we have been doing so many Geoff…

Meaningless Awards of the Week-
10/29/08

Dropped! Avengers: The Initiative I am sick and tired of Skrulls. How long has this invasion been going on for anyway? Aside from mutants and Spider-Man, the Marvel Universe has been completely dominated by Skrulls this year, and I can’t stand it anymore. Here’s my new rule: if a Skrull is in a book, and…

Book of Doom:
Hellboy: In the Chapel of Moloch

Hellboy: In the Chapel of Moloch was the first Hellboy story I’d read in years. It reminded me of two important points: 1. How almost effortlessly cool this book seems and 2. How exponentially better it is when Mignola does the art As a kid, I remember hating Mignola’s art. I just knew him as…

The Doomino Effect for Oct 22, 2008

I have 12 books in my stack this week. No lie. First up is Final Crisis #4, which is definitely my favorite issue of the series so far. This, of course, is relative to how awful I thought the first three issues were. Back in college, I took a beginning screen writing class from a…

Meaningless Awards of the Week- 10/22/08

Most Pointless- Birds of Prey #123 A few weeks ago, I said that the ending to Birds of Prey #122 was the Best Ending of the week. It ended with The Joker entering BoP HQ with Barbara Gordon all by herself. Well this issue started with the cops showing up and scaring The Joker away,…

Book of Doom:
Superman: New Krypton Special

Geoff Johns. Do we have a hard-on for that guy or what? This marks the fifth consecutive Book of Doom written by him. But I assure you that this is mere coincidence. There’s even two other writers on the book this week. We just can’t help it if Johns is a kickass writer and makes…

The Doomino Effect for Oct 15, 2008

The Secret Invasion tie-ins continue to devolve into pointlessness. Where they once shed new light on the background of the events leading up to where we are in the main series, Mighty Avengers #19 continues the recent pattern of telling stories that are sort of nice on their own but completely disappointing as successors to…
