Local news for January 10, 2009

• Announcing 12 Hour Comics Day! Some participants from Lincoln’s 24 Hour Comics Day this past fall have put together a more modest and unofficial sequel for Saturday, January 17th at Jones Coffee in Lincoln. You can find out more information at the 12 Hour Comics Day facebook page. As with 24 Hour Comics, Doomkopf will reprazent.

• Capes and Krypton are both hosting upcoming Magic tournaments. Magic isn’t really a Doomkopf thing, so we don’t really know much about it, but the winner of Krypton’s event receives a trip to Hawaii. I wonder if putting a Magic player in Hawaii is like putting a vampire in sunlight. The winner of their November tournament won a trip to Japan. Krypton hasn’t updated its website in more than a month, but here’s all the info I have: the tournament is January 17. Registration begins at 10 a.m. Registration is $25. The tournament starts at 10:30 a.m. You can click on that image to get your own copy of the poster. As far as the Capes tournament goes, the info I have is a little more ambiguous, so contact jvalandra@gmail.com if you’re interested.

Krypton Comics is having a big sale this week, running from Wednesday January 14 to Sunday January 18.

• The Capes newsletter continues to grow, now arriving each week as an 8-page PDF magazine. This week’s issue includes a look back on 2008, remembering the Hollywood superheroes who passed on last year, superhero resolutions for 2009 and more. You can subscribe to the newsletter at CapesComics.com. Also, check out the Capes gang’s video podcasts at comicbookcrossfire.libsyn.com or on the Capes myspace page at myspace.com/capescomics.

• Capes has also begun selling comic bundles, packaging a handful of sequential (or close to sequential) issues for super cheap. Don’t forget “Ladies Night” each Thursday at Capes, which means women get 20% off everything in the store starting at 4 p.m. Capes also has 20% Tuesdays, in which all comics on the wall are on sale. And as always, Capes features the Doomkopf.com Book of Doom in the shop. Capes customers and Doomkopf.com readers are encouraged to email us your review of the weekly pick to have it included in Saturday’s roundtable.

• This week’s “Featured 500,000 Comic of the Week” at the Legend online store is Silver Surfer #1 (Vol 2, 1982).

If you have any comics-related news from the Omaha / Lincoln / Council Bluffs area that you’d like included in the weekly updates, send an email to doomkopf at doomkopf dot com.
