Book of Doom:
Final Crisis #7

Welcome to the latest edition of Doomkopf’s Book of Doom. This week, our roundtable discussion is about the final issue of Grant Morrison’s “Final Crisis.” This isn’t the first time we’ve discussed the series on here, and our Book of Doom has even been devoted to its issues more than once or twice. For this…

Winking Back at Hercules

I imagine it’s probably a futile effort to convince anyone to start picking up Hercules.

That’s probably why Marvel tricked me into subscribing to the book. But, I continue to subscribe because, damn! it’s the funniest funny book I’ve ever read.

Picking up Hercules, initially, feels a lot like getting one of those men’s bodybuilding magazines. For someone with a pre-Cap Steve Rogers frame like me, it especially feels like I’m trying to compensate for something. I mean, here’s Herc, bare-chested, hairy, and enormous. And he wears a skirt that sometimes, depending on the angle, comes a bit too close to exposing his mythic peen.

Marvel annoyingly—and perhaps wisely—transitioned The Incredible Hulk title into The Incredible Hercules, shortly after the Grecian’s appearance in “World War Hulk”. I’m not sure why, exactly; I don’t know that there was a lot of previous demand for Herc to have a solo title. All I can assume is they wanted Hulk to have a new title, with a new #1, that the character isn’t strong enough to support multiple ongoing titles, and the company wanted to milk suckers like me who didn’t realize the changeover would last quite a bit longer than temporary.

The Doomino Effect for Jan 21, 2009

In this episode: Green Lantern #37 | Amazing Spider-Man #583 | Guardians of the Galaxy #9 | Mysterius the Unfathomable #1 | Superman Beyond #2 Speaking of Superman Beyond 3D #2, I skipped the first issue last summer because it struck me as dumb. Then Doom DeLuise told me that issue #1 explained how Superman…

Book of Doom:
Mysterius the Unfathomable #1

I chose Mysterius the Unfathomable #1 as this week’s Book of Doom because I was looking for something completely different to dig me out of my spandex superhero rut. And with that as my goal, it was a complete success. I went into this with absolutely no familiarity whatsoever with either creator. I was quickly…

The Doomino Effect for Jan 14, 2009

You know, after Final Crisis #5, I finally felt like I was on the bandwagon. That issue had a lot of crazy going on, but it seemed to be moving in an intriguing direction. The closing splash page, showing that demoted Monitor rising back up to his godlike status, declared “The Judge of All Evil…

Book of Doom:
Action Comics #873

This week, we chose Action Comics for our Book of Doom, because it’s the conclusion to the quite entertaining New Krypton story-arc, and we were all interested in seeing how that wrapped up, as well as what the new status-quo is going to be in the Superman books. And now I really don’t care. I’m…

The Doomino Effect for Jan 7, 2009

With all the holidays and weird shipping schedules, the Doomino Effect has taken some time to adjust, but now it is back with two weeks worth of comics. Starting off is Batman #684, which is the second part of “Last Days of Gotham” by Denny O’Neil. I have to say, I sure could’ve done without…

Book of Doom:
Incognito #1

Sorry it took so long for this review to get up, but we’ve been behind in getting our comics, and we’ve all been pretty busy with other stuff. Hope you can forgive us, because this is the last time I’m ever apologizing for anything, ever again. Incognito #1, to me, seems like a perfect first…

Doom and Doomer: The Spirit

Welcome to the latest installment of “Doom and Doomer,” in which members of the Legion take a look at comics on the big screen. Tonight, your participants are Jim Doom and Doom DeLuise, looking at the new Spirit movie, starring Gabriel Macht, Eva Mendes, Samuel L. Jackson, and Scarlett Johansson, based on the character created…

The Doomino Effect for Dec 24, 2008

Starting off this week’s haul is Batman #683, the conclusion to the two-part “Last Rites” storyline, of which part one was a Book of Doom earlier this month. While working on a separate post about the Gnosticism in Final Crisis, I came upon a July blog on Final Crisis #2 which mentioned one of Grant…
