Worst Hero of 2008
Doom DeLuise says: That Dark Tower Guy!
I’ll be honest with you; I don’t know dick about this series. I bought the first issue of the Gunslinger in 2007, but that’s the extent of it. My old roommate used to buy this stupid thing all the time, though, and I’d occasionally read an issue while drunk or at his behest, so I have a fair idea of what’s going on.
And, as far as I can tell, the main problem with the entire thing is that the main character is just about the most boring character you could possibly imagine. As far as I can remember, I don’t think he’s even had a single line of dialogue in any issue I’ve read.
He’s just laughably bland.
Jim Doom says: Cyclops!
Cyclops emerged from Messiah Complex as a grade-A jerk. He’s always been a total dork, but now he’s a total dork with a bad attitude who recruits kids to be murderers. He also used kids as a distraction in Messiah Complex, making them easy prey for the Marauders. The worst part is that the writers don’t appear to realize that kind of behavior isn’t heroic. Man, he’s lame.
Here are our picks for Worst Hero in years past:
2007:
Jim Doom: Cyclops
Doominator: Nobody
Fin Fang Doom: Everyone in Countdown
Doom DeLuise: Iron Man2006:
Fin Fang Doom: Iron Man
Doominator: WildC.A.T.s
Doom DeLuise: Nightwing (after Infinite Crisis)
Jim Doom: Nightwing (after Infinite Crisis)
I didn’t remember that I already hated Cyclops with #1 status last year, and he got even worse!
maybe they’re setting him up for a face turn, a la Iron Man?
Granted, I’m out of the loop because I’ve since dropped all X-books, but the big difference between Iron Man and Cyclops from when I was still reading was that it was very clear that Iron Man was taking a douchey path and setting himself up as a bad guy. With Cyclops, it seems more like the writers have a belief that they’re making him tougher.
The best analogy I can think of is how torture advocates act like they’re the true heroes, because they’re willing to do what it takes to defend freedom, with no regard for the consequences, quality of intelligence, etc. It’s like Cyclops is the torturer, and we need to respect his balls because he’s just that heroic, dude.
I should’ve been more clear that I was joking and completely agree with you that it’s just shitty writing. Except it was so consistent through the X-books that it seemed like the X-writers must’ve gathered at some point to see who could pull his Bad Idea Jeans on the fastest.
